Earlier this year Tree Logic was involved in a pilot study with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government to undertake a tree inventory and make recommendations about future auditing needs so that the ACT Government can better manage their ageing tree assets through a renewal and cyclic maintenance program.
The ACT Government has identified 5 key drivers for its Urban Forest Renewal Program
- Decreasing the Government’s exposure to risk from tree related incidents
- Maintaining the ‘look and feel’ of Canberra
- Maximising the benefits of the urban forest
- Normalising the age-class structure
- Prepare for changes in climate

Read more about the size and scope of the project and why the ACT Government’s approach is at the cutting edge or urban forest management in Australia.

On 26th August 2009 a new Australian Standard was released AS 4970-2009, Protection of trees on development sites. This long-awaited standard provides guidance for arborists, architects, builders, engineers, land managers, landscape architects and contractors, planners, building surveyors, those concerned with the care and protection of trees and all others interested in the integration between trees and construction.
This standard is a best practice document for the planning and protection of trees on development sites and while there will be some discussion about some of the principles with the standard, the fact that all involved in the tree industry can now use and speak a common language should mean better planning and protection of trees in the long-term.
The standard can be purchased from Standards Australia.

Tree Net an independent non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the urban forest held its 10th annual Symposium at the National Wine Centre and the amazing Waite Arboretum in Adelaide in the first week of September.
