Where did October go?
In Melbourne things go pretty crazy from the AFL Grand Final which is the last weekend in September. It’s then Spring Racing Carnival and suddenly before we know it we are listening to on-hold music playing Christmas Carols. I am making the assertion that Melbourne travels even faster than Sydney in the last three months of the year. For myself personally October was spent at the physiotherapist, osteopath and acupuncturist trying to mend a partly torn upper hamstring. Not a pleasant injury. I now have a new found respect for all who have encountered this injury! It is I’m pleased to say… healed!
Now back to marketing…. So what marketing activities should businesses be undertaking right now in the lead up to Christmas. It’s almost time for celebrations and thanking clients for business but before then you must keep an eye on sales for January. In a few short weeks every customers focus will be on the festive season and your opportunity for sales may have passed you by until Australia is well and truly into the Australian Open (mid January for the not so sports aware!). The good news is that people love to spend at this time of year. Wallets both personal and company are open and the pain to purchase isn’t there. So make the most of it. Tempt and tantalise your customers with genuine offers. If you’re having a sale – make it a beauty!
Most Asked Marketing Questions
No. 6:
Q: What advertising gets the best bang for your buck?
A: There is no single answer. It depends on your business, how much you have to spend and how often you are advertising and how many other competitors are advertising in the same way.
Advertising just once doesn’t work – or if it did for you trust me you were lucky! You need to look at advertising at the very minimum 3-5 times. You also need to see who you are competing with in a particular form of advertising. Obviously the more competitors you have advertising in the same arena, the harder it is for your message to stand out. Other factors that can influence the effectiveness of an advertisement include copy and design. However some forms of advertising just don’t suit a particular medium. If you have a largely visual product then advertising on radio may not be the best way for you, rather a full colour glossy ad or an internet ad with a link to your website might work best. The most important thing in all forms of advertising is to get the basics of advertising correct. AP Marketing Works has a “How to Write an Ad Kit”
