End of Financial Year Sales Results–
the view from the Bush Walk
I recently went to one of my favourite places on earth Wilsons Prom National Park (southern most tip of Australia’s mainland). After a 20 kilometre bushwalk to the pristine and spectacular Sealers Cove, I came to the conclusion that bushwalking is very much like achieving sales in business. It is relentless, monotonous at times, requires a great deal of motivation but the end goal is worth it. Along with this realization I came to the conclusion that I need new hiking boots – but that’s another story. At the completion of the bush walk (standing with wet, sore feet, tired legs and soggy clothes) I was surprised to find I was inspired to do more bushwalking (not right then and there but again soon) as the views I had experienced made it all worth while.
The process required to achieve sales can feel like bushwalking in dodgy hiking boots. You have to start somewhere and you need to keep going even when you have achieved a sale. In looking at what motivates a bushwalker I realized some things about how to motivate yourself in achieving sales.
Seven suggestions for sales motivation:
- When you reach your sales targets, like a beautiful view, take the time to enjoy it.
- Make sure you keep your end destination in sight.
- Realise that every step you take is getting you closer to your end goal
- Have a map so you know where you are going
- Get advice as to the most effective way to reach your sales goals (check out Super Selling for Small Business)
- Record your sales victory (I’ve got some great pictures of Sealers Cove)
- Go to Wilson’s Prom for motivation!
