Don't dredge the Yarra: ships chief breaks ranks
A MAJOR shipping company has called for the Port Phillip channel deepening project to be scaled back, saying the controversial plan to dredge toxic sediment from the Yarra River can be avoided.
Last week, trucking magnate Lindsay Fox called for the entire project to be scrapped, saying Melbourne's roads were already clogged with container traffic, and that future growth in that traffic should go through Hastings, on Western Port.

FROM THE FORUM (quotes)
I am a resident of Yarraville and have a negative view towards the trucks and would like to see change.
However, whilst I believe the motives of mtag are great, I believe the energy is somewhat wasted by seeking to influence change through the political system. Frankly, most political parties are funded directly or indirectly by the same organizations who control the trucks and the city-link toll way wont change because of the Transurban contract which is in place for years to come.

I am sure my experience of living on Somerville Road is not unique, however my frustration means I need to tell someone who understands and cares! And maybe my little voice, when added to all the other voices, stands a chance of being heard.

We are at Williamstown road intersection on francis, and have found that we have more hair line cracks tham we used to. also after restumping there is still a lot of vibration ,especially at night from the big double trailers. I think I may be Costa's best polyfiller customer.

Friday 1st February 8.00am
Corner Francis St and Williamstown Rd Yarraville
In response to an overwhelming number of requests from residents for a protest rally we have decided to hold one THIS FRIDAY to coincide with the planned COMMENCEMENT OF CHANNEL DREDGING.
The commencement of channel dredging is a BLACK DAY for the inner West because truck traffic is projected to quadruple and the government has no plan in place for how to deal with it.
We all know it's a hellish situation with trucks. We currently have 20,000 trucks a day on our streets and the highest levels of diesel pollution recorded in Australia and it’s set to get much worse. Channel deepening should be halted until the government can provide a costed plan for how to deal with all these extra trucks. This kind of ad hoc approach to infrastructure development is totally unacceptable.
It doesn’t make sense to create even more truck traffic in the middle of Melbourne and we’re angry because we will bear the brunt of it. Other options should be properly investigated.
Let the politicians, who are supposed to legislate to protect the health and safety of citizens, know that you are fed up! Fed up with the health of your kids being compromised by uncontrolled numbers of trucks. Fed up with the pollution. Fed up with the noise. Fed up with being treated as a second rate citizen!
Protest at the intersection of Francis St and Williamstown Rd in Yarraville, which carries about 8,000 trucks every day, from 8.00 to 8.30am on Friday 1st of February.
Please help to draw attention to the plight of residents ignored in the process of port development planning... It’s not just the marine environment that will be devastated by this ill-conceived project but also the social fabric of the inner West.
Come on your way to work. Wear something black or bring something black to wave (it's a black day for the inner West). If you have one, wear a gas mask or paper dust mask.
