1. Should I advertise in the yellow pages?

The answer to question 1 and 2 is the same… it depends.  You need to understand your customers and potential customers and the way they behave.  Where do your customers expect to find an advertisement about your products and services?  For example if you are a tradesperson the local paper in the trades section is usually a reasonable place to advertise (although many tradies find that letterbox drops work just as well).  Do people expect you to be in the Yellow Pages and if so in what section?  Do they look on-line or in the book?  These are all the questions you need to have answered before you can make a decision on advertising.  The most important part of advertising is to evaluate the effectiveness of advertising.  Some people year in year out place an ad in the Yellow Pages but never check the effectiveness.  A simple how did you hear about us can provide you with the answer to the question – should I advertise in the Yellow Pages?  If you have got lots of customers from the ad yes!  If not so many….no!  The great thing about advertising in the on-line yellow pages, especially if you have a link to your website is that you can monitor the effectiveness.   On-line advertising is becoming a boom area for that very reason.
